Suriname – New Civil Code Suriname enters into force on May 1, 2025

On 6 February 2025, the official entry into force of Suriname’s new Civil Code and related legislation was set for 1 May 2025. This marks a historic modernisation of Suriname’s civil law, after more than 30 years of preparation and intensive parliamentary debate.

In addition to the Civil Code, the General Terms Act, the Commercial Register Act and the Code of Civil Procedure, among others, will enter into force. These amendments will affect not only civil law, but also tax practice, for instance in term calculations and collection procedures.

A guidance committee and targeted information programmes will have to ensure smooth implementation. An important step for legal development and legal certainty in Suriname.
