Exciting developments in Suriname for businesses and multinationals! As of November 1, 2024, a streamlined process is now in place to simplify short-stay visa, work, and residency permit applications for foreign professionals. These changes were outlined at a presentation on October 18 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation (BIBIS), hosted for the business community by representatives from BIBIS, the Ministry of Labor, Employment & Youth Affairs (AWJ), the Ministry of Justice & Police, and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Key Highlights: 21-Day Processing: Thanks to this new approach, permits should now be processed in as little as 21 days. Online Registration & One Stop Unit (OSU): With the OSU launched on November 1, applications can be handled jointly by BIBIS, AWJ, and Justice & Police representatives, reducing wait times and increasing efficiency. Only the Civil Registry (CBB) and Foreign Police will need separate contact.
With significant growth in Suriname’s oil and gas sector, demand for foreign experts will increase—not just in energy but across related industries. As noted by Luziano Truideman, Director of General Management & Consular Affairs, this initiative responds to business concerns over previous delays in permit approvals, which impacted essential operations and tax registration.
After two years of dedicated inter-ministry coordination, this new procedure is now in effect for eligible companies and multinationals in Suriname. It aims to grant qualified businesses faster access to necessary permits, unlocking opportunities for foreign talent and investment in Suriname’s rapidly evolving economy.
